First to Fail

Major League Baseball has issued the first suspension for a positive steroid test--a nobody centerfielder for the Tigers. Could the player, Alex Sanchez, be a mere sacrificial lamb to appease Congress, the only people who seem to care about how exciting baseball has been during the last ten years? No star will ever get caught because anybody making that kind of money who has even half a brain can get the undetectable designer drugs used in the NFL.

  • How predictable was this? Find some nobody, put the hammer down, and let everyone stand in awe of the awesome power of the new drug policy.

Of course they choose some poor guy who hits for average (.322, only 4 HR last year), steals bases, and only makes 600k this year. He maintains his innocence, and according to his numbers, I'm inclined to believe him. Speed guys don't juice.

  • Except, notably, for sprinter Ben Johnson who started the discussion of steriods in sports.

  • But in baseball there's little incentive to juice for speed - power is where the reward is. Fast guys are a dime a dozen, but only a select handful can mash 40 HRs a season. Cheating for speed makes no sense.
